Newsletter: Advancing Tailoring Skills for Women’s Empowerment

Refugee Women Organization (REWO), in partnership with the Feminist Humanitarian Network, continues to create opportunities for women through practical skills development aimed at promoting economic empowerment and self-reliance.

We are proud to share the success of our Advanced Tailoring Skills Training Program, an initiative designed to strengthen women’s capacity in fashion and design while promoting creativity and environmental sustainability through recycling and craft-making.

The training directly benefited 50 women, including 35 refugee women and 15 women from the host community, equipping them with advanced technical skills to improve their livelihoods and create sustainable income-generating opportunities.

Building Advanced Skills in Fashion and Design

Through this intensive training, participants gained hands-on experience in:

Advanced garment cutting and stitching

Modern fashion design techniques

Pattern drafting

Creative finishing and fabric design

Quality production standards for market-ready products

The program was designed to help women move beyond basic tailoring
and develop professional-level skills that increase their
competitiveness in local markets.
Promoting Innovation Through Recycling
In addition to tailoring, participants were trained in the recycling
of disposed plastic bottles into creative crafts and reusable products.
This component focused on transforming waste materials into valuable handmade items such as:
Decorative crafts
Household utility items
Fashion accessories
Eco-friendly products for sale
By integrating recycling into skills training, the program promoted
both environmental conservation and innovative entrepreneurship.
Strengthening Social Cohesion

One of the most impactful outcomes of the program was the collaboration between refugee and host community women.
The shared learning environment fostered:
Stronger relationships
Mutual understanding
Knowledge exchange
Peaceful coexistence
This initiative demonstrated the power of skills development in
building bridges across communities while addressing economic
vulnerability.
Creating Pathways to Economic Independence
For many participants, this training represents more than acquiring technical skills—it is a pathway toward:
Financial independence
Small business creation
Increased household income
Greater confidence and self-reliance
