REWO-UNHCR Self-reliance and livelihood project

The primary focus of BREWO’s activities through this funding is to develop leadership and business skills and provide opportunity for women and youth groups to engage in productive activities in order to generate income and thereby enhance their self-reliance.

This will be achieved through capacity-building on financial literacy and business ideas to equip women and youth with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to access economic opportunities, gain control of their lives and exert influence in society. The trained women and youth will be facilitated with startup capital to engage in meaningful businesses after a careful selection of the right enterprises.

This project, therefore, seeks to bridge the gap by empowering women and youth through economic opportunities and leadership development. By enhancing skills, promoting financial inclusion, and strengthening representation in decision-making, the project will contribute to improved livelihoods, gender equality, and resilient communities in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 5, 8, and 10), Uganda’s National Development Plan IIII and Yumbe District local development plan.

Indicate whether the proposed activities are new or already existing.

The proposed activities are both building upon existing initiatives and introducing new interventions to address identified gaps. Bidibidi Refugee Women Organization (BREWO) has previously supported women and youth in Bidibidi Settlement with small-scale livelihood initiatives such as soap-making, and awareness campaigns on leadership and gender equality. However, these efforts have been limited in scope and resources, reaching only a small proportion of the population.

This project will expand existing activities such as vocational skills training and women’s leadership mentorship while introducing new components including structured access to microfinance/savings groups, enhanced market linkages for women- and youth-led enterprises, and formalized leadership and civic engagement workshops. These new interventions are designed to create sustainability and scale impact across refugee and host communities.
